Is Online Dating safe?

Many people are intrigued by the idea that online dating can offer you the opportunities to meet all kinds of people ranging in age, types, and personalities.  With a click of a comment button you can contact anyone you wish within a matter of seconds, and if they are online also, start to initiate a conversation that may lead to a serious online dating scenario.  The wealth of opportunity that can await a person online once they start online dating is endless and exciting.  At the same time, whenever there are a large number of people participating in a large activity, you do run the risk that a few of them are not being honest or have threatening intentions in mind which you should not ignore.

Due to a few bad cases that have garnered media attention, some people refuse to try online dating because it seems an unsafe habit and method of dating to engage. This in itself is somewhat ridiculous as you can face threats online, but you can also face the same threats if you leave a concert at night and have to walk to your car alone in the dark, or you leave the club or bar by yourself at 2am.  There are some risks involved in online dating, but most of them are minimal and simply due to people feeling they can lie about the smaller things (the 28 year old who is really 40) and so on.

If you are the one taking online dating seriously, this may sting and leave you with a bad aftertaste, but think about this, how many blind dates have you been on that have ended horribly, you are still dating, even if it is online dating, and not everyone is going to be a perfect match right out the dating door.  As for any safety concerns, the rule of thumb is pretty simple.  Never give out too much information about yourself, the exact address of where you live, and in some cases your last name.  Using an alias is always a safe bet until you get to know a person better and/or get to meet them in real life.  If the person you are online dating is as serious of you, chances are they are wary as well, so let that bring you some relief.  Meet in a public place and always have friends hidden in the background and you can stop worrying and simply enjoy the situation.

There is so much opportunity to online dating and the many outlets it presents to you in finding a partner that you should not shy away from it because you have heard potential worrisome things about it.  There is no perfect dating scenario in the world, although it would be nice if online dating was one!  You have no other choice but to jump out there and give it a try, because you never know what you may find, and it can be a rewarding experience at the end.
